Lilly Issberner Q&A: meet Predn Surf Co’s team rider
In November 2021, we welcomed Newquay grom Lilly Issberner to the Predn Surf Co family, as our first ever team rider. Right from our initial exchanges, it was clear that Lilly cares deeply about the environment, and beyond tearing up the local line-up, likes to use her surfing as a means to make a positive impact in the world. At just 13 years of age, Lilly is the future of surfing we’d like to see.
Lilly Issberner is as amped for 2022 as we are
In 2021, Lilly surfed in competitions for the very first time, and speaking to her at the beginning of 2022, it’s obvious she’s hungry for more…
Hi Lilly! 2021 was your first year of competitive surfing. How do you feel it went?
Yes, I took part in the Ripcurl Grom Search at Fistral and also the English Nationals at Watergate Bay, where I placed 3rd in the U14 girls. The competitions went well… I was very nervous, it being my first time in competitions, but I really enjoyed them and I’m hoping to do more in 2022!
You’re Predn Surf Co’s first ever team rider… Why do you want to represent Predn in 2022?
I want to represent Predn because I like their brand ethos and passion for protecting the planet. It’s a good feeling to surf a Predn board knowing I’m not harming the oceans and wildlife whilst I surf.
Who are your idols in surfing and why?
Leah Thompson and Bethany Hamilton. Leah Thompson is a great surfer and has a strong faith. Bethany Hamilton is a strong, inspirational woman who constantly pushes me to be a better version of myself. She also has a strong faith.
Your favourite surf spot in the UK and abroad?
My favourite surf spot in the UK is Watergate Bay, and abroad is Freights Bay in Barbados.
What are your passions outside of surfing?
I really enjoy fitness and working out – I’ve been working on my fitness with Tehillah McGuinness for the past year to help me with my surfing and to improve my general fitness. I also enjoy other sports like netball and football. I have a really strong passion for art: I enjoy drawing and photography.
Finally, what are your surfing ambitions in 2022?
My surfing ambitions for 2022 are: competing in the same competitions as I did last year, but also competing in the Surfing England Junior Surf Series, which has 5 stops around the UK. If I do well enough, I’ll get to compete in the finals. I’m really hoping to be consistently on the podium this year with some fantastic results!
